Each November the members of See Jane Write are challenged to blog every single day for the whole month. I would like to share with you what I have learned in my first week and what I'm looking forward to the rest of the month. 1. Let Others Shine If there is anything I have learned from Javacia, the leader of See Jane Write, it is to showcase the amazing talents of others. I have started a section of my blog called Spiffy's Pinterest Picks dedicated to exactly that. I...

Pecans have always been a big deal in my family. At my grandparents' house in the Mississippi Delta there are giant pecan trees. I remember as a child my dad climbing the tall trees and shaking the branches. Then all us kids would run to gather up the pecans. Grandaddy would give us a little money for each bag of pecans we gathered. This is one of my favorite memories. My cousins and I had so much fun. This year my boyfriend is going to meet my Delta family for the first time at Thanksgiving and I am so excited. He happens to be a huge fan of pecan pie, so I'm sure we will be coming home with...

I have suffered from migraine headaches since I was about 7 years old. I have been on different headache medications throughout my life and still have never been able to successfully treat the pain and agony. So today I have decided to look at 3 actions I can take weekly to prevent my headaches. I truly believe prevention is the best medicine. 1. Gerson Apple Carrot Juice If you have not seen " The Gerson Miracle " yet, please check it out. Dr Gerson was a brilliant physician who strongly believed in food as preventative and healing medication. One of his main recipes is a raw, cold pressed...

Tuesday is shopping day every two weeks for me. Why Tuesday? To be honest, it's the day our local dairy Working Cow Organic delivers to my local store. I love getting my milk that first day and so I schedule that day to do all of my shopping. Today I wanted to share some basics that are on my regular clean eating shopping list. If you read my blog on 20 minute meals , you know that I usually follow an easy formula to make my dinners. The shopping list is based around that, but also includes snacks, lunches, and breakfasts. I buy almost everything organic when possible. The list does not...

A new friend recently told me about a drink called Switchel. I had never heard of it before, but he boasted of its health benefits and delightful flavor, so I was intrigued. Switchel originates as an Amish tradition. The drink is used to quench thirst and aid in electrolyte balance during harvest time. Switchel typically consists of vinegar and ginger. Sometimes honey or molasses are added. I chose to use my Champion juicer and juice 6 apples, 1 carrot, and 1 small piece of fresh ginger. I then added 1/4 cup of cinnamon, 1 teaspoon all spice, 3 teaspoons pure maple syrup, a couple sprinkles...

Pressure Cooker Bone Broth

Two problems, one solution. 1. I've had an Elite Pressure Cooker collecting dust in my cabinets for months. 2. I've had an insane desire to make some delicious bone broth. Solution: Why not use my pressure cooker to make a fast bone broth? All of the bone broth recipes I have seen require several hours on the stove or in the crock pot. A couple weeks ago I stumbled upon the Swell Living Blog. Finally, someone was telling me that this far fetched thought of mine was attainable! I adapted the recipe a bit to fit my style and here is what I came up with. I grabbed 1/4 of a cabbage, carrots,...

Instead of searching Pinterest for "Can I thaw chicken with my hair dryer?" let me show you a simple formula that will have a clean eating dinner on the table in no time. 1. Choose a protein That chicken may be frozen, but that can of beans is ready to go. Maybe you have frozen salmon, but that can of tuna...

I woke up this morning with swollen, puffy eyes, stinging ears, and a headache. I don't think my body is as excited about the Birmingham Fall as I am. I thought about making my Immune Boosting Chicken Soup, but realized I do not have that kind of time today. After dragging myself into work two hours late, I did a little research on Golden Milk in between clients. Here is what I found out. Golden Milk is believed to: 1. Act fast as an anti-inflammatory 2. Improve brain functions 3. May reduce risk of heart disease and Alzheimers I decided to take it a step further and instead of using simply...

Cold and flu season is already here and I intend to bid it farewell immediately! After researching endlessly for immune boosting foods I have put together a fantastic tasting chicken soup. This soup is loaded with a lot of good things to boost your immunity. The turmeric is a quick acting anti-inflammatory. The garlic and lemon are both natural antibiotics. The veggies are loaded with vitamins. The chicken stock is full of amino acids that will speed recovery time, and the list goes on and on. Basically, if you are feeling a cold coming on, or right in the middle of the dreadful thing, this...

We all know we should eat our vegetables. I remember, as a child being made to stay at the table until my microwaved, mushy, canned carrots were all gone off my plate. Little did my parents know that most of the nutrients had been zapped out during processing and microwaving, which explains why I never liked the bland orange atrocities. I'm so glad that I've learned ways to enjoy fresh, local carrots now! This is Gerson Therapy Carrot Apple Juice. Read more about the juice here . I have grown to truly love organic, local carrots. They are a delightfully, sweet treat. Now, I'd like to share a...

Here is a...

Hi everyone! Welcome back to my series on Clean Eating. I hope you are having a beautiful day! Today we will be discussing processed foods and the potential harm they can impose on your health. Let me start by saying that food processing is a massive subject. There is no way that I will be able to cover everything in one blog post. I hope to simply shed some light on the subject. I have noticed there is not a lot of basic, easy to understand information out there. I hope this blog post will change that. All food that we eat is processed, in some way. Chopping, cooking, mixing: all forms of...

One of the hardest times to eat clean, unprocessed foods is on road trips. Those cheap drive thrus with colorful signs of clowns, cows, and tacos are so tempting! So today I would like to share five quick tips to being a mean, clean, traveling machine. 1. Make a menu Yes, I said a menu. I don't mean a fancy five course meal. I mean figuring out what foods your family likes. Choose family favorites to avoid falling prey to those tempting fast food joints. 2. Choose food that travels well While you want to choose favorites of your family, your husband'a favorite seafood stuffed potato may not...

When I asked Amber why she got into clean eating she said it was because of her children. "I wanted my children to be as healthy as possible. I...

I had an absolute blast at Spin Class at Inspire Fitness tonight! We went on a grand adventure through Stage 16 of Tour de France . It was the most challening ride I've ever done on a Spin bike or road bike. We did sprints, slow steady uphills, and pushed ourselves hard!
