How I am training for a 5k

I haven't done a fitness post in a while. To be honest, most of my summer fintess has consisted of outdoor adventures with the dog. I do not follow a specific fitness plan during the summer because I know that I will get outside and be active every chance I get!

Over the last few weeks, that has changed. Why?

I AM TRAINING FOR A 5K! String up the banners, give me a cookie, all the above. I am extremely proud of myself. In my opinion, it does not matter how big or small your healthy living goals are. It only matters that you set them and accomplish them. Being active is a lifestyle, and small goals set on a regular basis make all the difference in sticking to that lifestyle.

Am I saying running a 5k is not a big accomplishment? Quite the opposite. It is a huge accomplishment. By setting small goals for myself, I plan to have a successful run!

Here are my small goals that I am working on each week to make this an amazing 5k run!

1. Strength Training

(Confession, I don't take selfies at the gym, but this is pretty much exactly what I look like when I'm lifting).

Did you know that most running injuries could be prevented if runners took the time to participate in active strength training?
Personally, I know that I tend to have weak knees and shoulders. I am specifically doing exercises to strengthen my thighs, hips, and traps 2 times a week.

2. Meditation

In my diy meditation garden!

For me, running is more of a mental game than anything else. I tend to let myself believe that I am at the point of exhaustion way before I actually am. To strengthen my mind I have started practicing yoga 10 minutes in the morning and 10 minutes at night. That way my mind will be able to recognize just how strong my body really is!

3. Couch to 5k

Yes, I am actually running to train for the 5k run! You were wondering, weren't you? I am using the free Couch to 5k app for my iPhone, and it's working great for me. I am running 3x a week. 2x indoors and 1 outdoors (to be sure my body is acclamated to the heat).

Want to run the 5k with me? Good news, you can and it's totally free! Head over to Stellar Fashion and Fitness to sign up. Also, be sure to check out Jennifer's first live Periscope tonight for more information about how to prep yourself for the run!
