How participating in #BlogLikeCrazy landed me my first magazine spread
The first time you see your work in print is the most incredible, astounding, prideful, gleeful, exciting... Ok, let me start at the beginning.
Last year I participated in the See Jane Write challenge Blog Like Crazy. Every November women all accross the country commit to blog every single day of the month. Last year when I decided to participate I experienced many emotions throughout the challenge.
- Joy: yay I'm going to rock this!
- Anger: late at night, no blog ideas... why did I decide to do this?
- Fear: what if I write every day, and no one takes the time to read it?
- Pride: wow, I'm really doing it. I'm writing new content every day!
- Sense of Accomplishment: I really did it. I wrote every single day in the month of November. I do rock!
I learned so much about my writing style during last year's challenge. I love creating recipes, I love taking photos, but I already knew that. The new thing I learned is that I am passionate about local culture. I realized that getting out and meeting people in my city was near and dear to my heart and should also be an element in my writing. I began to go to restaurants, farmers markets and any event pertaining to food. I met so many amazing people and learned the heart behind many of Birmingham's eateries. Through this process I met the editor of several local papers and magazines. He saw my work over the last year and asked if I would be interested in sharing some recipes in November's issue of Lakeside Living Magazine. I was thrilled! I still am!
I hope those of you considering participating in this See Jane Write challenge will be encouraged by my story. I never thought that I would grow so much during this process. I had no idea I would land this magazine gig. I am so glad that I took the plunge and overcame my fear and self doubt. I cannot wait to see what amazing things happen this year!
