One of my favorite things in the entire world is family recipes. I love hearing stories of my family gathered together enjoying special recipes. It's amazing how a certain smell or taste can bring us right back to a certain time in our lives. Grandma's biscuits, Mom's buttermilk pie, Dad's chili, Mama Rose's sausage bread. Each one holds special memories of incredible people in my life. Today's recipe is one that was introduced to me by my boyfriend's mother. She is an amazing cook and I feel like I learn something from her every time we spend time together. A few years ago for Christmas she...

The first time you see your work in print is the most incredible, astounding, prideful, gleeful, exciting... Ok, let me start at the beginning. Last year I participated in the See Jane Write challenge Blog Like Crazy . Every November women all accross the country commit to blog every single day of the month . Last year when I decided to participate I experienced many emotions throughout the challenge. Joy: yay I'm going to rock this! Anger: late at night, no blog ideas... why did I decide to do this? Fear: what if I write every day, and no one takes the time to read it? Pride: wow, I'm really...

I had the amazing privelege of attending the soft opening for Tropicaleo . If you haven't heard of Tropicaleo yet, stop what you are doing and read this. After that, go eat the best Puerto Rican food in Alabama! They are currently serving lunch in the kitchen of Crestwood Tavern (until their new location opens in Avondale) Mon-Fri from 11-3 and brunch Saturdays and Sundays from 10-3. Ok, so back to the opening. As soon as I entered Crestwood Tavern the smell of earthy spices filled my senses. I had my first taste of this delcious food at the Woodlawn Street Market and the anticipation of...

Today was my first visit to the Alabama Farmer's Market. What an incredible day it was! I brought my friend Mary along and we scouted out the best peaches we could find. These will make a beautiful biscuit topping, cobbler, or maybe even an ice cream! I also snagged some juicy tomatoes and crisp cucumbers to whip up a simple summer salad later this week. There was also face painting and a small petting zoo! These guys are very photogenic. Here is our entire haul from the market. All for $25, I might add. I'm excited about these Mississippi sweet potatoes. Maybe some sweet potato pie...

The streets of Woodlawn were booming this morning as we made our way through the Street Market. Birmingham is returning to its roots in the midst of massive growth and development. It's an exciting time to call Birmingham home. I usually write a lot, but today, I really feel like the photos speak for themselves. I do want to mention one amazing thing. As we walked through the market, we asked several vendors what inspired them to start following their dreams? In these conversations we came accross not one, not two, but THREE folks who had gone through the Co.Starters Program from Rev...

From the moment I saw the lovely exterior of this new spot, I knew it was perfection. The mix of southern charm and industrial pieces fits perfectly with the small town of Homewood Alabama. As we walked in to the cafe, we were met with friendly faces and warm greetings. Before I even stepped up to the counter to order my food, a staff member had placed a warm cup of Alabama's own Royal Cup Coffee into my hand. As I sipped, my friend and I decided what food we would order. Everything at Real and Rosemary is whole food options. We had the opportunity to meet Jennifer Mims, one of the owners...

I am finally doing it. I am gathering up all my courage and hosting my first ever Periscope! Tomorrrow morning I will be live at 9:00 AM at The Pepper Place Market in Birmingham . I will be live and this will be my first time. I am a little nervous about doing the scope outside and in such a crowded place, so I hope you will all be patient with me if the sound/light are not the best. My plan is to show you the market! Let you see some of my favorite farmers and if I'm able to answer any questions you may have. Buying local is a strong passion of mine and we are proud to support Pepper Place...

I LOVE BACON! Seriously, you guys, I really love bacon. So often, I hear my family members asking me for health advice. They say things like, "I eat pretty healthy, but sometimes I do have bacon." They get this guilty look on thier face apologizing to me for eating bacon. Try as I may to conivince them that bacon is not the enemy we have been trained to think it is... they never seem convinced. We purchase bacon that is ethically sourced and free of added sugars. And we eat it several times a week. Read more here about why healthy fats are so vital to your health! WE SHOULD ALL EAT MORE BACON...
