#SpiffyHealth 10 Day Meditation Challenge

I will often have friends and family ask me about stress management that doesn't require time. "What can I take to reduce my stress?", "What oils can I use to eliminate my anxiety?" "What supplement do you use to relieve stress?"

Although I am a strong believer in using essential oils and even supplements on occasion, the truth is, none of these alone can reduce your overall stress. What can? 10 minutes a day.

The most effective way, I have found to reduce my stress, is through meditation and prayer. I find benefits from just 10 minutes a day. Instead of thinking of these 10 minutes as one more thing you have to schedule, time away from your loved ones, or something else to fit into your tight schedule think of it this way. This 10 minutes a day will help me be the best I can be. I will be under less stress, in more control of my emotions, and feel better physically. Therefore, I will be in a better place to encourage my loved ones, organize my thoughts and calendar more efficiently, and handle life's every day stresses.

In other words: This 10 minutes is adding time to my life by making me more efficient!

Benefits of meditation, from Deepak Chopra:

• Relief from stress and anxiety (meditation mitigates the effects of the “fight-or-flight” response, decreasing the production of stress hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline)

• Decreased blood pressure and hypertension

• Lower cholesterol levels

• More efficient oxygen use by the body

• Increased production of the anti-aging hormone DHEA

• Restful sleep

Ok, now that you know why you should do it, the question is How? How do I make time for this in my daily life?

Make it a Priority

You must decide that reducing stress and living a happier, healthier life is important to you. It effects how you treat those around you and how you deal with daily situations. This is all up to you.

Tell Your Friends

This is a huge one for me. When I am incorporating new habits into my life, I make it a point to tell my friends and family what I am doing, why I am doing it, and how I am planning to do it. This not only gives them the opportunity to participate, but also opens me up to accountability. Encourage them to be part of your journey. Be open to questions they may have.

Forgive Yourself

No one is perfect. There will be days when you do not make those 10 minutes of meditation a priority. That is ok. Forgive yourself and move on to be successful the next day. The most important thing is to not let one missed day define you. Remind yourself why you are doing this and keep going.

Where do I find these 10 minutes?

  • Wake up 10 minutes earlier
  • Do it right before bed
  • Use 10 minutes of your lunch break
  • Ask your family to take a 10 minute walk, and give you the house
